One of my most overarching political philosophies is that all people deserve fair and equal treatment under the law. Having separate parking spaces mandated by those in power is tyranny. Now then, should a company/business/establishment CHOOSE to set up special places for those with moving problems to park, then I’m all for it. Well, the ability to make a choice at least.
Too often this is abused.
There’s a guy at work who gets the same handicapped parking space right up front near the door. He has the label on his license plate so he isn’t breaking any laws. But let me tell you about this guy. There’s a 9 o’clock break every day when the laborers head outside or go to the cafeteria to eat some stuff. I always pass this guy and he heads right for his truck to go to the store. Every day. And he has no need to fear because his parking spot will be right where he left it. Not only does this guy have full mobility in his legs, he practically runs to the truck at the end of the work day. I know, I’ve seen it in action many times. Verdict: this guy isn’t handicapped, he is an asshole. Does his spouse get around with a wheelchair? No idea. But I bet he’s not shuffling anybody around in that pickup truck of his. Throughout my years of participating in brick and mortar commerce, only a single digit percentage of times have I seen some asshole have a legitimate need to use a handicapped parking space.
Then they get on the road. These people didn’t read the manual: having a handicapped tag isn’t an excuse to drive under the speed limit. I express road rage constantly and the bastards are a frequent target.
The moral of the story: if you have handicapped tags and you use them to get a leg up (haha!) on others, you are an asshole. Fuck you.
